Trees are a big asset to any commercial property. They provide shade and help to add natural beauty to the space. Unfortunately, trees do not live forever. Age, pests, and bad weather can cause a tree to sustain enough damage to lead to its premature death.
When this happens, you may have a brand-new problem on your hands. Whether the whole tree tumbles down or just a branch, it may result in property damage or even injury. Here’s how to identify if you have a hazardous tree on-site.
It Starts to Break
Even healthy trees can shed limbs from time to time. If the tree survived poor weather, then this is even more likely. It may then shed unhealthy parts and continue to thrive. However, if a tree routinely drops branches, and worse, begins to lean, you may have a dead tree in the yard.
Branches Are Bare
Unless the cause and effect are immediate, such as in the case of a lightning strike, trees usually only shed bare branches. Do not wait for this to happen. Take a good look at the tree and see if you spot any new growth. If the branches are bare, there’s a good chance there’s no life in the tree anymore.
Fungus Growth
Fungus can grow on all types of trees, even when they are doing well. However, when large types of fungi take over your tree, it may be because it is dead. Note that fungi feed on decaying material, so their presence may signify internal rot. The most common ones to look out for are wood conchs, also known as bracket or shelf fungus.
